About the Foundation

The Edna Wardlaw Charitable Trust is an independent charitable foundation, established in 1992 by Ednabelle Raine Wardlaw. Today, her descendants carry on her legacy of philanthropy.

The mission of The Edna Wardlaw Charitable Trust is to make charitable contributions that are ethical, humanitarian and driven by respect for social justice, the protection of the environment and the well-being of our world, and demonstrating the recognition that needs are universal.

The Wardlaw family views engaging in philanthropy as an opportunity to communicate and reinforce family values to future generations. These values include:

  • Accountability/Ethics

  • Equality/Liberation
  • Justice/Social Order
  • Knowledge/Insight
  • Unity/Diversity

Guidelines

Funding Priorities:

The Trust supports charitable institutions with a focus on the following areas:

  • Animal Welfare and Rescue,
  • Education,
  • the Environment, and
  • Human Rights (including access to housing, education, and fair wages).

Geographic Focus:

The Trust generally focuses their giving where family members live, including:

  • Georgia (mostly Metro Atlanta);
  • California;
  • Colorado;
  • South Carolina;
  • Florida, and
  • Oregon.

On occasion, grants that are national in scope are also considered.

Types of Support:

The Trust prefers to fund:

  • General/Operating Support
  • Program Support

Capital Requests are typically not a priority, but are considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Foundation is open to providing support wherever it is needed most in service to the mission of the non-profits they support.

Restrictions:
The Trust does not accept unsolicited applications from organizations they have not funded in the past.  (NOTE: If you are a former grantee, you do not need an invitation to apply for renewed funding and can apply by the June 15th deadline.)

Eligibility Requirements:
The Trustee will consider all qualified applications received from organizations that are exempt from taxation under the Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). If you are a 509(a)(3) Supporting Organization, please be prepared to provide additional information. Grants are not made to support individuals.

Grant Cycle and Deadline Information:

Applications must be received by June 15th. Organizations selected to receive funding will typically be notified in late summer/early fall.

Grant proposals are evaluated on the basis of a demonstrated need for the project; clearly stated objectives and a well-developed plan for achieving them; evidence of the organization’s ability to manage, fund and sustain the project; and appropriateness to the interests of the Trust.

Recipients of grants are expected to submit a report on the expenditure of the funds and an evaluation of the project.

Grant Range:
The average grant size is between $5,000-$20,000.
